"Adoption" by Christopher Slatoff

This weekend we ventured into Los Angeles and embraced our inner-tourist for my sister's "doing something different" birthday request.  It was fun and we had a nice time as a family, but my purpose in posting today is simply to share what we stumbled across.  While roaming the wings of the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels, Tim waves me over and says, "Honey, look at this."  Off to the side was a modest-sized sculpture, all bronze.  It doesn't really catch your attention from afar but up close, in front of a little plaque that says "Adoption" by Christopher Slatoff, sets a tender portrayal of father and son.  The description reads, "Depicting St. Joseph as he stops his work and tenderly picks up his young son, the sculpture is a visual meditation on the meaning of fatherhood."

We'd never thought of it that way before.  I doubt Joseph wasted much time worrying about what he might be missing if he didn't get to share a genetic-link with his Son.

  1. Joseph's surrender was a great example of responding to God's call, only surpassed perhaps by that of the Virgin Mother Mary. This sculpture is powerful. May it give you strength as you both react to God's call.
